Free agency is winding down, trades are coming in a little bit less frequently, and I think it's fair to say we're now merely in the Warm Stove season. But there's still a month and a half until Pitchers and Catchers report, two months until Grapefruit and Cactus League games start, and three months until the Regular Season - in fact, it's still football season for another week. Surely primary free agency will linger for a while longer before it ends completely (there's still at least one marquee player potentially on the market, but as an international free agent he has to sign officially before he can be opened here, as well as plenty of role players), and trades will go on indefinitely, but the reality is that things are beginning to slow down after a fast and busy offseason.
To acknowledge the hard work that's been done by all 30 GMs during this offseason and during the year plus that Pro-GM has been running, as well as to fulfill the request for Power Rankings and to entertain you and myself and generate some lively discussion, I am introducing a new feature called Ranking the Rosters, which will be coming out serially over the coming weeks. This feature will analyze different aspects of teams in the league, such as lineup, rotation, minor leagues, etc, and will work as follows:
1) I will announce which aspect of the teams I'm evaluating next, and create a poll asking teams to vote for the (up to) ten teams that they think are leading the pack in that aspect.
2) Using these results as a guide (but not necessarily following them to a fault) I will rank and create a writeup for the top ten teams of that aspect.
3) Later in the offseason I will use the rankings to create overall power rankings, focusing on the team's outlook for 2012 rather than on specific parts of the team.
4) Time permitting, I may also create individual write-ups for each team, highlighting strengths and weaknesses and looking into the process of roster-building and how the team got to where it is now.
I'm hoping to generate lots of discussion and excitement about the variety of different roster styles throughout the league. Stay tuned!
