This calendar should give you some sense of what a year in the life of a Pro GM should look like. Please note that dates for the first year will be different and announced separately.
October: End of season - Any player with an expiring contract leaves your team and becomes a free agent. This includes players who have achieved six years of service time. Trading opens. Free Agency remains closed. Begin roster posting period.
November/December - Finish posting rosters. Tender contracts to players you want to keep. Any major league players who have achieved an additional year of service time must be bumped up to the next salary level. Any major league players who have not achieved an additional year of service time may be renewed at the same salary level. Any players not tendered a contract will become free agents.
Any players in your minor league system who have achieved at least one year of service time must be brought up to your major league (40-man) roster at this time and given a salary appropriate to their major league experience, or they will be eligible to be taken by another team in the Rule V Draft.
Posting rosters is the last chance to non-tender players on the "recurring option" salary schedule (for example, IFAs signed through free agency for more than $5 million who were then kept as cost controlled players at 50% of that salary). Other players may be non-tendered throughout the offseason.
December - Rule V Draft - Draft order determined by record the previous season, using Gold Points. During the Rule V Draft, players who are in minor league systems but have achieved at least one year of service time may be drafted by a new team and must be added to that team's 40-man roster and paid appropriately. If these players are put on any type of waivers, their former team has first priority. Older minor leaguers not on a roster are also eligible to be drafted.
December/January, following Rule V Draft: Free Agency Opens - Free agency opens with 10 players to be selected randomly by the commissioner from among the top free agents, balanced based on positions. See the rules and free agency sections for complete free agency procedure and other information. Free agency will continue until the pool is exhausted.
March: End of Offseason, prepare for Yahoo - GMs must be sure that rosters posted in the rosters section are up to date and payroll information is accurate. The commissioner will check over rosters and then enter them into the fantasy site.
March/April: Regular Season Begins - Free agency re-opens as "Secondary Free Agency." For the next six months we will be going head-to-head to determine regular season standings and post-season results as you might expect to see in a public fantasy league. Any transactions, including free agent signings, trades, call-ups, send-downs, etc, will continue to be made on the Proboards site. The commissioner will process these transactions and enter them in on the fantasy site on a weekly basis - post transactions by Friday so they can be entered in over the weekend for the following Monday.
July 31: Trade Deadline - July 31 is the last day to make trades until after our World Series ends. Trades can still be posted after this time but will not be processed until following the season.
August: Amateur Draft - Our amateur draft will begin following the signing deadline for the June Amateur Draft. Immediately following the end of our amateur draft, up to four minor leaguers who were not drafted in our draft and are not on any team, and who play in your real-life team's system, may be rostered up until one week after our World Series, provided they have not achieved a year of service time and you have room for them.
August 31: Secondary Free Agency Ends - August 31 is the last day to open the bidding on new free agents. Free agency will be closed from the time that those free agents are won until primary free agency opens again.
September: Playoffs Begin - The exact week that the regular season ends and playoffs begin will vary, but it will be listed on the fantasy site. The last few weeks of the real life regular season will serve as our playoffs. Twelve teams will make the playoffs. One team will end up Champion. The last day of the MLB regular season will be the last day of our playoffs.
