Time to start the regular season. Today (Wednesday, March 31) is the last day for Primary Free Agency and Non-Tenders.
After today, free agents will only be able to be opened in Secondary Free Agency. In Secondary Free Agency, only one year contracts are allowed and only players who have completed a year of service may be bid on. Those older minor leaguers (age 24+) who you could previously have signed as a primary free agent are no longer eligible. Discounts do not apply in secondary free agency.
Today is the last day to non-tender players (firm deadline of midnight on the west coast), which means after today any player still on your roster earning more than $0.5 million MUST be paid for the entire season (players earning $0.5 million can always be cut in "minor league cuts"). If you want to release (post in "buy outs") a $1.5 million (3rd year) player you will have to keep paying him his 1.5 million for the rest of this season. You would not have to pay him for his 4th, 5th, and 6th years of course, since those years aren't guaranteed. But if you tried to buy out a player signed as a free agent, "(2021-2024)" for example, you'd be on the hook for all four years.
Please double check your Fantrax rosters to make sure nobody is there who shouldn't be, and everybody who should be is there. For a few teams, I set rosters and/or lineups for you because you had not been active yet on Fantrax. Make sure to take a look before the games start tomorrow to make sure your team looks like it's supposed to!
New this year, you will be able to process your own transactions on Fantrax (you do not have to wait for a commissioner to add a player you've officially signed, or drop a player whom you've cut or bought out). Just be sure that all of these transactions are posted in the appropriate thread on Proboards before completing them on Fantrax. You can also submit your trades in Fantrax once the 24 hour review period is complete (assuming the trade was not vetoed). Your lineup on Fantrax locks once the first game of the week begins so be sure to set those ahead of time.
Players signed this winter as free agents may be traded starting May 15. Players signed prior to May 15 may be traded at that time. Players signed after May 15 may not be traded this year. The trade deadline is July 31.
Reminder: as per the "mercenary rule", players on expiring contracts who are not on their new team's roster on opening day will not earn their new team a comp pick if they are lost in free agency. If a trade is posted today, you can still earn a comp pick for the player. If the trade is posted tomorrow, the acquiring team will not be able to receive a comp pick.
I think that's all, but any further important information will be added to this thread.
Best of luck this year!
