Amateur Draft:
Our amateur draft will take place beginning in August, following the signing deadline for MLB's amateur draftees. Any player taken in MLB's draft will be eligible to be taken in our draft. Also, any prospects who have not yet completed a year of service time but do not already appear on a roster in our game are eligible to be drafted, provided they were not international free agents of the age of 24 or older on January 1.
You may draft players taken in the MLB amateur draft who then fail to sign contracts with their teams in hopes that they will be re-drafted and sign in the future.
In August, a thread will be put up in which the draft will take place. The draft will last six rounds (eight starting in 2013), plus a compensation round between the first and second rounds for teams who lost type A free agents and earned compensation. The draft order will be determined by the previous year's standings, with the team with the worse record picking first. In the event of a tie, the standings from two years previous will be used. For the first year, we will use the true standings from the 2011 season.
You will have 12 hours to make your pick from the time that the previous GM picks in the first round, and six hours in the compensation and all subsequent rounds. If you miss a pick it becomes the next GM's turn, and he or she may pick any time. You will have an additional 12 (first round) or 18 (subsequent rounds) hours during which you may still make up your missed pick without a penalty (except, of course, losing the opportunity to pick any players picked by the GM or GMs after you who picked during that time). If you still have not made your pick after the additional 12 or 18 hours, you will be given the highest drafted remaining player who signed a contract. So, make sure you check in at least once every 24 hours during the draft so there's no chance of losing a pick until the next round, and preferably more often so that you don't miss your pick at all.
When you select a player, please post the player's full name and position, as well as the Major League team in whose farm system he plays or by whom he was just drafted. Also post the name of the team that is picking after you in the draft. So, a post could look something like this:
Pirates select:
Bryce Harper, C, Washington Nationals
Mariners are up now.
In addition, if you have to drop a player from your roster to make room for the new player (because you can only have 70 players in your organization), please post the name of the dropped player underneath. The player you drop may be drafted by another team, if another team is interested.
Immediately following the completion of our amateur draft will be a period during which you may roster up to six (four starting in 2013) players from your corresponding Major League club. None of these players may have completed a year of service time yet, and none may appear on another team's roster. You will post a list of the players that you roster in a thread created for that purpose in a single post. You may have to drop players in order to make room for your new players. If a player changes teams in real life during this process, he will belong to the team for whom he played at the beginning of the rostering time period (the end of our draft). This period will last until one week after our World Series ends.
Rule 5 Draft:
The Rule 5 Draft will take place after the tendering period ends and rosters are set, and it will be an opportunity for you to draft players who have achieved a year of service time but were not called up by their GMs in our league. You must place any players drafted on your 40 man roster, and if you attempt to waive the player at any time during the following season the team who lost him in the Rule 5 Draft has first priority.
The draft order will be determined the same way as the amateur draft order, but it will use the standings from the season that just ended. The Rule 5 Draft will last for one round.
During the Rule 5 Draft, rosters will freeze. This means that you must call up any players in your minor league system who have completed a year of service time by this date if you wish to protect them. Any players who have completed a year of service time still in your minor leagues are available in the Rule 5 Draft.
You may only have 40 players on your major league roster, and any players drafted in the Rule 5 Draft must be placed on your 40 man roster. That means that if you think you might want to draft players in the Rule 5 draft, you must leave space on your 40 man roster for them before the rosters freeze.
GMs may draft any player who has one year of service time (over 130 ABs, over 50 IPs, or over 25 Games Pitched) that appears in this league's minor leagues.
You must place any players drafted on your 40 man roster, and if you attempt to waive the player at any time during the following season the team who lost him in the Rule 5 Draft has first priority.
However, you may also draft any non-rostered minor leaguer (has not completed a year of service) that will be 24 years of age or older on January 1, as long as he has been in MiLB for at least a year, and in this case you do not need to put the player on your 40-man roster.
Picks in the draft will last for 4 hours. If you miss your pick the draft will continue to the next person. You will have an additional 20 hours during which you can make the pick up. If you have not picked by then, you lose your pick.
When drafting a player, please post the player's name and position, former team (from our league), and service time, and then announce who is up next, like so:
Pirates select:
Daniel Nava, OF, Boston Red Sox
One year service time.
