Playing to Win

I'm not sure if this line of conversation ever made it to the boards, but I'm recalling a few lines I saw in the chatango a few weeks ago, regarding GM's being somehow required to "at least" fill a starting roster.
The only reason I'd even begin to mention it is the pending review (though now official, I'd hope) trade between the Pirates and I.
I'll start there, and end with my overall pose. None of this is meant to be preachy or as a call-out or anyting, just as a point of enthusiastic curiosity mostly, and to somehow imply that this league is rad and should be attended, at the least, by being able to "put a team on the field"....lol.. anyway, here's my jam....
Whether you were for a veto, or not, of my trade with the Pirates, I think the discussion leads to a broader point- most of you thought I made out mad on that swap. I think, though, that you missed how the Pirates improved his competition-ready team. He added 40+ steals, 35+ homers, 140+ IP's and 10 W's out of a bullpen that, for him, had only featured one lonely RP. He traded his "oldest" starter (of 7) and a Playoff Poster Boy who's never even reached 350 AB's in a single season, and a B- lefty who could peak at "Ted Lilly" or just as easily tumble toward "Jo-Jo Reyes". Surely, I see the upside in the players I acquired in the trade and to get them, I was willing to part with Trumbo's own potential (and 2012 OF eligibility) because, honestly, I think he's gonna end up on the A's and their wide foul territories scare me, swallowing AB's. And I was willing to part with 2 surefire RP inning-eaters because I think that's what my #3 Rule V pick Pedro Strop is gonna be for me and why I acquired the younger Tony Sipp....but anyway....
My point is, I just think Justin has the right idea in making that move.
He's playing to win in 2012 by, at least, have a team to field.
I mean, isn't that the point?
Is the game to gather all the prospects and wait....?
Or is it to win as soon as now?
It's a fine line, I get it...but worthy of more conversation, I think.
