Here it is, the announcement you've all been waiting for...
Free agency will begin Sunday, January 16 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. It will be conducted in the free agency thread.
EIGHT free agents will be bid on at a time for this free agency period (because the offseason started a little later than it will in the future).
The starting eight free agents will be announced at least 24 hours before the start of free agency. They will be selected randomly from among the Type A free agents. To start off with there will be one catcher, two 1B/OF/DH's, two 2B/3B/SS's, two SPs, and one RP.
You will not be able to bid if you have not had your roster approved. If you post that you are ready for us to approve your roster at least 48 hours before free agency starts, I can promise you we will look it over in time. However, if it has problems, you will have to fix it and we will have to re-approve it, and if you haven't fixed it 48 hours beforehand I can't guarantee that we will do it in time so you may miss the start of free agency. If you post your roster less than 48 hours before the start of free agency, we will get to it when we can but there is no guarantee we will get to it as quickly as you might like.
The safe thing to do would be to post your roster well before the start of free agency. So, if you haven't let us know that your roster is ready for approval, please get it ready as soon as possible.

Uh oh, sorry Twins. You really only need to check in once every 24 hours though. If you do that, you won't miss anything.

I hate to dissent because I really want this to happen, but I do worry about the competitive balance of the league with so many rosters still not even set up. Can we at least check on these people before starting?

I doubt any free agents will be signed within the first 48 hours of the thing starting up, and certainly not key ones. That means that even if your roster isn't approved for a week from today, chances are you'll only miss out on a couple free agents out of the literally hundreds of guys available. We need to get this thing moving and most GMs have been very active. We can't hold everything for the few who are exceptions. That said, I am in contact with most of them and I have been encouraging them to finish up as quickly as possible.

These are the rankings we will use for free agency compensation. They are not official, because Elias does not release the official rankings, but they are extremely close to being 100% accurate. For our league, these will be the only official rankings for this season. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/2009-10-elias-rankings.html

If we sign one of these guys, do the teams who lost them win a pick?

"You will receive compensation when losing a Type A free agent who played for your team the previous year as long as you offered a contract with a raw annual value of at least 50% of his previous year's salary but failed to sign the player. If anyone offers a player a contract with a raw annual value of 75% of his previous year's salary, then the team that the player played for the previous year will receive compensation regardless of whether that team made an offer that was higher than 50% of his previous year's salary, assuming they don't re-sign the player. You will only receive compensation for Type A free agents. Compensation will take the form of a pick in the compensation round between rounds 1 and 2 of the amateur draft. The draft order of the compensation round will be determined by Elias ranking, with higher ranked players first. Official Elias rankings are not released, so we will use Eddie Bajek's reverse-engineered rankings, which can be found here for the '10-'11 offseason: www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/2009-10-elias-rankings.htmlThere might be a few minor discrepancies between Bajek's rankings and the true Elias rankings, but since we don't have the official rankings, Bajek's rankings will have final say even when we know they disagree with the official ones." If the guidelines for receiving a comp pick are met teams will get comp picks for the current free agents, yes.

So if I bid on ARod (or anyone) at higher than half his salary, and the Yanks guys didn't want to go for that 50% because ARod makes way to much, then he doesn't get the pick...

just a thought for future - would it be better to put out the names of the top free agents first? In baseball, everyone waits for the big names to sign and then go after smaller names who may fit their team. Seems better to me in here too. At least you know if you lost the big player you want and then spend money on others. Also what happens if names are drawn that no one wants and they just sit there not being bid on as everyone is waiting for the big name to come out? Just something to think about for next year...

Im pretty sure how it works is after the initial 8, another gm puts a bid on a player and if noone bids on him then the manager who put the first bid on him to be entered in the bidding wins him.

not really what I was saying....
take for example now - ibanez is out there - no one may bid on him so it just wastes a spot - people are waiting for crawford, holiday, ect. put them up first then you may get some people bidding on ibanez...if they lost out on the better ones.

we did a random drawing of the type A's, it's more fair than just saying the best guys start. Let's say I want Jeter, I'm going to want people to spend their money before I open him so I can get him at a cheaper price. That's why we start with a random group of type A free agents and not only the best ones.

well what if no one bids on a guy - say 24 hours and no bid can he be removed until later and replaced?

yea, the rule is after 24 hours of no bids the player is removed from the list of active free agents and replaced by whoever someone opens.
