Any player who signs a contract with a new team for $15 million or more raw annual value (value before discounts are applied) will earn his previous team a pick in the Compensation Round of the 2017 Amateur Draft. The order will be determined by raw annual value from highest to lowest (ties will be broken using contract length, with the longer contract earning the higher pick; if still tied, the higher pick will be determined randomly). Below is the list of signed free agents who have earned their previous teams compensation picks:
Arizona Diamondbacks - Paul Goldschmidt - $44 million (four years) Tampa Bay Rays - Chris Sale - $33 million (four years) Colorado Rockies - Kyle Seager - $25 million (four years) Arizona Diamondbacks - Nelson Cruz - $24 million (three years) Miami Marlins - Stephen Strasburg - $22 million (four years) Toronto Blue Jays - Jason Kipnis - $21 million (four years) Colorado Rockies - Eric Hosmer - $19 million (four years) Seattle Mariners - Ryan Braun - $19 million (two years) Miami Marlins - Justin Turner - $18 million (three years) Arizona Diamondbacks - Salvador Perez - $16 million (four years) Tampa Bay Rays - Kenley Jansen - $16 million (four years) Detroit Tigers - Marco Estrada - $16 million (four years) Chicago White Sox - Lorenzo Cain - $16 million (four years) MISSING Colorado Rockies - Dustin Pedroia - $16 million (two years) Arizona Diamondbacks - Troy Tulowitzki - $15 million (three years)
