So guys, I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I quit my job as an elementary school teacher back in October. It was a six year career that I was deciding it was finally time to leave (long overdue). Been working with a career coach ever since. We've been looking at my aptitudes and interests trying to figure out what to focus on next, and doing lots of networking and research and all that good stuff. Finally narrowed it down to two things: land surveying and college admissions.
But a couple weeks ago i accepted a job with Quicken Loans. It's a shitty job, basically glorified telemarketing for mortgage loans, but at least it's a job, and it was time to accept something just so I can start working again, even if it wasn't right for me (I've been making money with my side job of designing, painting, and selling custom Star Wars action figures but it's not really sustainable long term). I start June 12. I'm hoping to find something better by then so I don't have to take it.
Anyway, last night I went to a land surveyor chapter meeting here in Michigan at the invitation of the chapter president, who I had been networking with. It was a fantastic experience, and two great things came out of it: I met a guy willing to let me shadow him in the field (today) and in the parking lot after another guy basically offered me a job as a technician for him.
So today I shadowed a land surveyor in the field. We were using an old survey map, metal detector, GPS, and geometry software to try to find this guy's western property line in a subdivision near Ann Arbor. I had a blast. Just such a rewarding and satisfying experience. I'm not sure i've ever felt this satisfied with a day's work in my entire life. I've always been a spatial reasoning, map and compass oriented, strong sense of direction, trig/algebra/geometry kind of guy. And working outdoors is perfect for me. So stoked. Gonna call the guy who offered me the job on Monday and try to make that happen. Wish me luck!
