Any player who signs a contract with a new team for $15 million or more raw annual value (value before discounts or penalties are applied) will earn his previous team a pick in Compensation Round B of the 2017 Amateur Draft IF AND ONLY IF the player was owned by the previous team for the entirety of the previous season. Compensation Round B takes place after the second round of the amateur draft. However, if the total value of the contract before discounts exceeds $50 million (all years combined), the pick will take place in Compensation Round A instead (after the first round). The order of both rounds will be determined by raw annual value from highest to lowest (ties will be broken using contract length, with the longer contract earning the higher pick; if still tied, the higher pick will be determined randomly).
Below is the list of signed free agents who have tentatively* earned their previous teams compensation picks:
COMP A
San Diego Padres - Max Scherzer - $36 million (four years)
New York Yankees - Joey Votto - $34 million (three years)
San Diego Padres - Josh Donaldson - $32 million (four years)
New York Yankees - Brian Dozier - $28 million (four years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Dallas Keuchel - $24 million (four years)
Detroit Tigers - Mike Moustakas - $22 million (four years)
Seattle Mariners - Jay Bruce - $21 million (three years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Jean Segura - $20 million (three years)
Chicago White Sox - Dee Gordon - $17 million (three years)
Arizona Diamondbacks - Matt Carpenter - $17 million (three years)
San Diego Padres - Johnny Cueto - $15 million (four years)
Milwaukee Brewers - Josh Harrison - $15 million (four years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Ivan Nova - $13 million (four years)
COMP B
Chicago White Sox - Edwin Encarnacion - $23 million (two years)
Los Angeles Angels - Andrew Miller - $19 million (one year)
Pittsburgh Pirates - Chase Headley - $15 million (one year)
*This list is tentative until we announce it has been confirmed. It will need to be verified prior to the actual draft. Among other things, we will make sure that teams who did not own their players for the entirety of last season are not receiving compensation for those players.
