I'd like to hear some discussion as to which fantasy carrier the rest of the league would like to use. The way I see it there are two options: fantrax (the one we were planning on using because it allows 30 team leagues) or Yahoo. I will not consider using ESPN, because I just don't like it (and it doesn't allow 30 teams either).
The final decision will be mine. I will not necessarily go with what the majority of the league wants. But I'd like to generate some discussion on the matter since at the moment I'm just not sure, and any input you all have might prove valuable.
Fantrax pros: allows 30 teams, extremely customizable Fantrax cons: head-to-head works differently than we planned, seems less user friendly than Yahoo, I've never used it so I'm not sure what bugs it has - less reliable.
Yahoo pros: as reliable as it gets Yahoo cons: only allows leagues up to 20 teams, so we'd have to create two separate leagues for the AL and the NL, and only allows up to 30 players per team

I'd say yahoo. But how would the world series work?

Obviously, Yahoo has some serious problems that would have to be overcome. But with that said, I think we could still use it. Here's how it would work:
We'd have separate leagues for the AL and the NL. When it comes time for the playoffs, 4 teams from each league will make it, and there will be two rounds. The first round would be the Division Series and the second round would serve as both the Championship Series and the World Series - two teams from each league would make the series, and the winning team would become the league champion. But of the two winning teams, we can quickly see which one had the better stats for the matchup, and that team would be crowned World Series Champion. It might seem less glamorous, but the end result is more or less the same. The other problem with having two leagues is that we can't just look at available players to see what players are available. For example, in the AL league, you might look and see that Albert Pujols is available (since at the moment he's in the NL). Now, this isn't a major problem since adding players will be done by the commissioner anyway, so it's not like an AL team could just add Pujols on a whim, but it makes it harder for you to see who's on a team and who isn't.
The other problem with Yahoo is that you can only have 30 players on a team. I guess what we'd do is make it so that the other ten major league players are still on your roster, but they'd be in reserve - if you wanted to add them to your 30 man roster (or we could make it a 25 man roster with 15 reserves to make it more realistic), you'd just have to post on this site in baseball operations and say who you want to switch out, and the commissioners would make the change.

I'm not clear on exactly how head-to-head works in fantrax. They use something called "fantasy points." I don't think the type of head-to-head that we were planning to use is available yet.

Just from reading the cons of Yahoo in relation to the specifics of this league (30 teams, 70 roster spots) fantrax seems obvious to me. I love Yahoo and have always used it for fantasy baseball but the two cons presented are pretty big and I imagine would be somewhat of a headache for the commish's to deal with. Not to mention the world series being somewhat anticlimactic.
I'm always up for something new so a new site would be kind of cool.

Okay so here's how Fantrax's head to head works: they use something called "fantasy points." So, we could say that an inning pitched is worth 1 point, a quality start is worth 10 points, having a better K/BB than your opponent for that day is worth 10 points (or having a better k/bb for the week is worth 50 points), a steal is worth 5 points, a home run is worth 10 points, etc, and whoever has the most points at the end of the week is the winner. Unfortunately, this is the only way fantrax does head-to-head at the moment. We could do this, but we'd have to have some serious discussion about how to weigh each category, and I can't imagine we'd be able to come up with something to make everyone happy.
Yahoo offers single-win head-to-head (the one we were planning on using).

The minor leaguers don't need to be on the fantasy roster.

I'd rather have a head-to-head world series between a team from the AL and NL. You could just do it manually?

If we can't use ESPN then i'd say Fantrax, I've been in points leagues before and they work well.

I think Fantrax works better for a large league like this. I think there could be some major confusion if we used Yahoo.

Okay, well if we go with Fantrax, we'll just have to make sure we find a balanced way to weight the stats.

I like having everyone on the same site. Works better for discussion, keeping people involved, ect. You may lose that when splitting it into two sites.

Fantrax has recently started charging for leagues with more than 24 teams. I think we're going to go with Yahoo.

How can we have one AL league and one NL league? Yahoo dosn't allow 15 team leagues.
