Any player who signs a contract with a new team for $15 million or more raw annual value (value before discounts or penalties are applied) will earn his previous team a pick in Compensation Round B of the 2019 Amateur Draft IF AND ONLY IF the player was owned by the previous team for the entirety of the previous season. Compensation Round B takes place after the second round of the amateur draft. However, if the total value of the contract before discounts exceeds $50 million (all years combined), the pick will take place in Compensation Round A instead (after the first round). The order of both rounds will be determined by raw annual value from highest to lowest (ties will be broken using contract length, with the longer contract earning the higher pick; if still tied, the higher pick will be determined randomly).
Below is the list of signed free agents who have tentatively* earned their previous teams compensation picks:
COMP A
Chicago Cubs - Manny Machado - $55 million (four years)
New York Yankees - Gerrit Cole - $42 million (four years)
Washington Nationals - Anthony Rendon - $34 million (four years)
Washington Nationals - Carlos Carrasco - $33 million (four years)
Baltimore Orioles - Charlie Blackmon - $28 million (three years)
Seattle Mariners - Yasmani Grandal - $25 million (four years)
Chicago Cubs - Chris Archer - $21 million (three years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Yasiel Puig - $20 million (four years)
Washington Nationals - Miguel Cabrera - $18 million (three years)
Colorado Rockies - Julio Teheran - $15 million (four years)
New York Mets - Corey Dickerson - $15 million (four years)
COMP B
Los Angeles Dodgers - Charlie Morton - $19 million (two years)
Chicago Cubs - Ryan Braun - $17 million (two years)
Arizona Diamondbacks - Robinson Cano - $16 million (two years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Sonny Gray - $16 million (two years)
Cleveland Indians - Yan Gomes - $15 million (three years)
*This list is tentative until we announce it has been confirmed. It will need to be verified prior to the actual draft. Among other things, we will make sure that teams who did not own their players for the entirety of last season are not receiving compensation for those players.
