San Francisco Giants Top Prospects 2017
Grade A- Prospects
Rafael Devers, 3B, Grade A-: Age 20, signed for $1,500,000 out of Dominican Republic in 2013; hit .282/.335/.444 with 32 doubles, 11 homers, 18 steals in 503 at-bats in High-A; left-handed bat with 60-grade raw power and excellent bat speed, steadily gaining command of the strike zone although not likely to be a walk machine; doesn’t have Benintendi’s polish but has more pure power projection; despite past doubts about his glove at third base, his defensive stats are strong with improving reliability and above-average range; scouting reports are now catching up with the defensive numbers and his reputation for defense is improving; ETA 2019.
Grade B+ Prospects
Anderson Espinosa, RHP, Grade B+/A-: Age 18, signed by Red Sox out of Venezuela for $1,800,000 in 2014, traded to Padres for Drew Pomeranz last summer; posted 4.49 ERA with 100/35 K/BB in 108 innings in Low-A, 115 hits; while numbers weren’t spectacular, he was just 18 years old in full-season ball; 92-96 with peaks at 97, should push upper boundary more often as he fills out his frame; both curveball and change-up are excellent for his age and he usually throws strikes with low-effort mechanics; makeup and mound presence also positives; at this point we basically need to see if he stays healthy; look for the ERA to come down as long as his component ratios remain strong; top of the rotation potential; ETA 2019.
Sean Reid-Foley, RHP, Grade B+: Age 21, second round pick in 2014 from high school in Florida; posted 2.81 ERA with 130/38 K/BB in 115 innings between Low-A and High-A, just 78 hits; statistics are strong across the board and the scouting reports back them up, with 92-96 MPH fastball, two quality breaking pitches, and a below average but improvable change-up; command is usually sharp; you can make a case for an A- but his season ended early with a sore elbow and he has a history of nagging injuries, which holds his rating back just a bit. ETA 2019.
Christian Arroyo, INF, Grade B+/B: Age 21, first round pick in 2013; hit .274/.316/.373 with 36 doubles, three homers, 29 walks, 72 strikeouts in 474 at-bats in Double-A; draws constant praise for swing mechanics, doubles power, and general heady play; hit .315/.348/.438 on the road last year, just .224/.278/.294 in difficult home park; long-term should be a .280ish hitter with doubles power; aggressive and could stand to draw more walks but he makes hard contact on pitches other hitters miss; arm and range fit better at third base than shortstop, has also played well in limited looks at second base; ETA 2018.
Kyle Lewis, OF, Grade B+: Age 21, first round pick in 2016 out of Mercer; hit .299/.385/.530 with three homers, 16 walks, 22 strikeouts in 117 at-bats in Northwest League; everything was going well until season ended early with serious knee injury; may not be ready to play again until July and injury was bad enough that it may reduce his speed enough to keep him out of center field; good plate discipline, above-average bat speed and power should carry him even at a corner; makeup is highly-regarded and that should help with recovery process. ETA late 2018.
Francis Martes, RHP, Grade B+: Age 21, Dominican right-hander acquired from Marlins in Jarred Cosart trade; 3.30 ERA in 125 innings in Double-A with 131/47 K/BB, just 104 hits; fastball up to 99 and consistently at 94-95; has developed a plus curveball to go with it; change-up still inconsistent but has progressed well enough to project him as a starter; control is fine for a young power arm with this kind of stuff although command within zone still needs a bit of work; needs time in Triple-A but has upside of a number two starter. ETA late 2017.
Grade B Prospects
Nolan Jones, 3B, Grade B: Age 18, second round pick in 2016 from high school in Pennsylvania, hit .257/.388/.339 in rookie ball with 23 walks, 49 strikeouts in 109 at-bats; rated a very advanced high school hitter, showed ability to take walks in pro debut but needs to make better contact and tap his raw power more often; arm and range should work at third with more reps; should eventually hit for both power and average. ETA: 2021.
Brady Aiken, LHP, Grade B/B+: Age 20, first round pick in 2015 coming off Tommy John surgery; posted 5.85 ERA in 46 innings between rookie ball and short-season-A, 57/21 K/BB, 52 hits; strikeout rate is promising; threw better late in the season; was in upper-80s at first but in low-90s by fall instructs; curveball and change-up should be solid with more innings; key now is building up workload and strength, can still be a number two starter if recovery continues properly. ETA: 2020.
Carson Kelly, C, Grade B/B+: Age 22, second round pick in 2012; hit .289/.343/.395 with six homers, 25 walks, 63 strikeouts in 329 at-bats between Double-A and Triple-A; superior defensive catcher threw out 31% of runners but with excellent passed ball and error rates plus good comments on backstop intangibles; makes contact but line drive swing cuts off natural power in 6-2, 220 frame; may be a late-bloomer with the bat. Glove will keep him in the majors for years and the hitting could still end up being very good. Industry enthusiasm for his hitting has increased over the winter and in this case I think the industry is correct. ETA 2017.
Dakota Hudson, RHP, Grade B: Age 22, compensation pick out of Mississippi State in 2016, posted 2.55 ERA with 115/35 K/BB in 113 innings in college; posted 0.69 ERA in 13 minor league innings, mostly in High-A, with 19/7 K/BB; extreme ground ball pitcher with fastball up to 95 and a plus cutter; also has decent curve and change-up; has arsenal to start but some project him in bullpen due to mechanics; projects as number three starter type if he remains in rotation role. ETA 2019.
Oscar De La Cruz, RHP, Grade B: Age 21, signed out of Dominican Republic in 2012; pitched 39 innings between rookie ball and Midwest League with 3.00 ERA, 51/11 K/BB; the strikeouts are not lying; fastball into mid-90s when healthy with curveball and change-up both showing above-average potential; control is good for a young power pitcher; assuming good health I expect a major breakthrough in ’17. ETA 2019.
Delvin Perez, SS, Grade B: Age 18, first round pick in 2016 from high school in Puerto Rico; hit .294/.352/.393 with 12 steals, 12 walks, 28 strikeouts in 163 at-bats in rookie ball; hitting ability was questioned pre-draft but he had no problems in pro ball, showing good feel for the strike zone and flashes of pop; uses 60-grade speed very well on the bases; has range and arm for shortstop but needs to sharpen approach on routine plays, typical for his age; could leap up prospect lists (B+ if not higher) if offensive potential maximizes; ETA 2021.
Juan Hillman, LHP, Grade B/B-: Age 19, 4.43 ERA in 63 innings in short-season A, with 47/24 K/BB, 66 hits allowed; velocity down from high school in upper-80s, still showed promising curveball and change-up and usually threw strikes although command within the strike zone could wobble; remains athletic and projectable; was strong early but looked tired down the stretch in August; I still like his chances to be a mid-rotation starter. ETA: 2021.
Grade B- Prospects
Bryan Reynolds, OF, Grade B-/B: Age 21, second round pick in 2016 out of Vanderbilt, hit .313/.363/.484 between Northwest League and Low-A, 14 walks, 61 strikeouts in 217 at-bats; only below-average tool is arm strength; features above-average speed and at least average raw power; drew walks in college but was more aggressive in pro ball; whiff rate is of concern but broad base of tools and skills means the Giants will be as patient as possible while he adapts; could be multi-category contributor. ETA: 2020.
T.J. Zeuch, RHP, Grade B-: Age 21, first round pick in 2016 from University of Pittsburgh; posted 4.50 ERA in 34 innings between GCL, NY-P, and Low-A with 38/7 K/BB and 31 hits; 6-7 right-hander with low-90s fastball that has been clocked as high as 96-97 at his best; very good curveball, with adequate slider and change-up; usually throws strikes; like Harris, he should be a fine inning-eating starter assuming his command holds as he moves up. ERA 2019.
Will Benson, OF, Grade B-: Age 18, first round pick in 2016 from high school in Georgia hit .209/.321/.424 with six homers, 10 steals, 22 walks, 60 strikeouts in 158 at-bats in rookie ball; impressive athlete with above-average power, speed, and throwing arm; hitting skills somewhat raw but could be a 20/20 player if everything comes together; more likely a long-term development project than a rapid riser. ETA: 2022.
Taylor Trammell, OF, Grade B-: Age 19, compensation round pick in 2016 35th overall from high school in Georgia; hit .303/.374/.421 with 24 steals, 23 walks, 57 strikeouts in 228 at-bats in Pioneer League; 70-grade speed and bat was more polished than anticipated pre-draft; could develop considerable power to go with the steals and decent feel for the strike zone will help all aspects of his hitting; arm may limit him to left field as he matures; makeup is a big plus; could develop any number of ways but I like the upside. ETA 2020.
Kevin Gowdy, RHP, Grade B-: Age 19, second round pick in 2016 from high school in California; pitched nine innings in rookie ball with 9/2 K/BB, four runs allowed; 6-4, 170 pound right-hander with projectability, throws 89-93 currently (some reports say 94-95) with more possible; change-up needs work but has a good slider and throws strikes; key now is gaining strength, stamina. Possible number three starter eventually. ETA 2021.
Grade C+ Prospects
Dom Nunez, C, Grade C+: Age 22, sixth round pick in 2013; hit .241/.321/.362 with 10 homers, 49 walks, 91 strikeouts in 390 at-bats in High-A; threw out 43% of runners with very low error rate; receiving skills are otherwise considered shaky and he gives up a lot of passed balls at this point, but ability to contain runners helps; good plate discipline and can flash some pop from left side but did not have anticipated breakout season despite playing in the Cal League; still interesting. ETA 2019.
Austin Franklin, RHP, Grade C+: Age 19, third round pick in 2016 from high school in Florida; posted 2.70 ERA with 40/16 K/BB in 43 innings in rookie ball, just 30 hits; fastball up to 93-95, curveball and change-up have potential to be at least average; good size at 6-3, 215; Rays have had good luck helping similar pitchers develop; command needs work but he wasn’t as raw in rookie ball as may have been expected. High upside. ETA 2021.

ETA 2021.
