Any player who signs a contract with a new team for $15 million or more raw annual value (value before discounts or penalties are applied) will earn his previous team a pick in Compensation Round B of the 2019 Amateur Draft IF AND ONLY IF the player was owned by the previous team for the entirety of the previous season. Compensation Round B takes place after the second round of the amateur draft. However, if the total value of the contract before discounts exceeds $50 million (all years combined), the pick will take place in Compensation Round A instead (after the first round). The order of both rounds will be determined by raw annual value from highest to lowest (ties will be broken using contract length, with the longer contract earning the higher pick; if still tied, the higher pick will be determined randomly).
Below is the list of signed free agents who have tentatively* earned their previous teams compensation picks:
COMP A
Washington Nationals - Jacob deGrom - 42 million (four years)
Los Angeles Angels - Jose Ramirez - 33.5 million (four years)
Colorado Rockies - Eugenio Suarez - 32 million (four years)
Houston Astros - Giancarlo Stanton - 32 million (four years)
Washington Nationals - George Springer - $30 million (four years)
Seattle Mariners - Zack Greinke - $30 million (four years)
Washington Nationals - Patrick Corbin - $27 million (four years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Kyle Hendricks - $22 million (four years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Jose Abreu - $22 million (three years)
Colorado Rockies - Nick Castellanos - $18 million (four years)
Los Angeles Dodgers - Jake Odorizzi - $17 million (four years)
Toronto Blue Jays - Jonathan Villar - $15 million (four years)
COMP B
St. Louis Cardinals - Michael Brantley - 17 million (2 years)
Los Angeles Dodgers - Masahiro Tanaka - 16 million (3 years)
Houston Astros - Edwin Encarnacion - 16 million (2 years)
Cincinnati Reds - Kyle Gibson - 15 million (3 years)
Los Angeles Angels - Nelson Cruz - 15 million (2 years)
Cincinnati Reds - Jake Arrieta - 15 million (2 years)
Boston Red Sox - Justin Turner - 15 million (2 years)
*This list is tentative until we announce it has been confirmed. It will need to be verified prior to the actual draft. Among other things, we will need to make sure that teams who did not own their players for the entirety of last season are not receiving compensation for those players.
