In Free Agency Bidding Procedures, there is a rule that states "Note that you are allowed to outbid yourself on a player, but it does not reset the 24 hour clock."
2 GMs have expressed concerns with this rule, so I'd like to open this up for discussion to the whole league. If at least 5 GMs post in this thread that they don't think this rule should stand, we will open it up for a league-wide vote.

I personally hate that rule. Instead of getting 1 year and the penalty that comes with it since it's over 10M, at the literal last few minutes you can change to 2 years and avoid the penalty, and get a discount? I feel like that's a bit of a loophole that needs to close. At least extend bidding for a small window, or don't allow changes to bids in the last hour or so.

Why does it make a difference? If somebody wanted to outbid me they could have just the same. Either way I’m still the one willing to pay the most - whether that’s over one year or two years doesn’t matter, nobody was willing to top it. Why should me increasing my offer make somebody reconsider outbidding me? The only reason I waited until the last minute was so as not to confuse the bidding and make people think there was more time than there was. This way it was clear to all that Zunino was expiring when he was. If I’d bid, say, 3 hours ago, then folks might’ve seen that time stamp and thought “oh there’s plenty of time left, no reason to bid now.” I waited until the last minute to give everyone full transparency on the end time as long as possible. Extending the bidding beyond the 24 hours allows GMs to postpone the bid on free agents they maybe reconsidered and DON’T want, and forces everyone to wait longer to open the next guy. That change would hurt everybody. The way it is now, me changing my bid hurts nobody.

I respect what you're saying, but disagree that you should be able to save yourself that 1 year premium penalty at the last minute by tacking on an extra year. Maybe I'm in the minority, wanted to bring it out.

While he may be saving on the 2 million penalty he might've paid, he's adding an extra year of salary at ~12 million. He's ultimately paying much more. If you weren't willing to beat his offer of 1/14, there's no reason to believe you would've beaten his offer at 2/14 so I don't personally agree that it should be a problem. I'm willing to let the discussion continue in a rules thread (NOT on this FA thread) and put it to a league vote if at least 5 people agree with Rob's perspective on this.

This isn't going to get any traction with the two most important people in the league basically disagreeing from the start, but I appreciate the discussion.

I'm totally willing to reverse this rule if it's what the league wants. Everyone is entitled to have their opinion heard and if I'm in the minority I absolutely will make the change.

I'm with Rob (Rockies GM) on this, a bid should be binding and if it was for one year and 24 hours passed that should stick!

I'm with Rob (Rockies GM) on this, a bid should be binding and if it was for one year and 24 hours passed that should stick! 24 hours didn't pass. I made sure to bid prior to that time. The rules as written currently explicitly allow GMs to outbid themselves. This discussion would be to change the rule moving forward.

Ill be honest and say im indifferent to this rule. My only thought would be if there was enough support, if a team upped their bid it could extend the end period by 1 hour. But in all honesty, what Ben said makes sense. Teams have had the time to decide to up the bid and they didnt. So for a team to up their own bid, it really doesnt matter if it was ending or not.

I think this sums up what I'm trying to say rather well. I'd be fine with the one hour extension, but 99% of the time it's not gonna matter since everybody else has already passed for 24 hours, and the other 1% of the time where another party actually comes in and bids it's like, then why didn't you bid before? My concern with adding the one hour extension is it would just piss off the people who were hoping to open somebody new. Or that GMs who regret their bid might abuse it to try to keep the bidding open and delay the (perhaps inevitable) closing of the deal. In an ideal world I'd have made up my mind on whether I wanted to bid one or two years when I first submit the bid, but tbh I just didn't have time to decide for sure in that moment whether the one or two year deal made more sense, I just knew I was willing to pay more than the current bidding, so I figured bid now, see how things shake out, work out the details later. Since the rules say I have to improve my bid when outbidding myself I figured the only person I was hurting in doing so was me.

I get what Rob is saying. I think a 1 hour extension could make sense. Sometimes you are trying to bid people up and are content with them taking the penalties so you don’t bid again. I also agree that it probably won’t lead to another bid but who knows.
Still somewhat indifferent. I’m fine with whatever the rest of the league wants here.

I would prefer leaving the rule as is. However, I'll go along with whatever the league decides. I don't see that adding an extension of time will solve anything other than just make things slightly more complicated. (Right now it's very easy to see when a bid hits 24 hours)
