Marlins apply (again!) for salary relief for SP Gavin Floyd 5.1 million (2015); only 54.1 IP in 2014 due to injury. Denied, 54.1 IP is enough to constitute a year of service time (Anything greater than 50 innings or 25 games pitched is a year of service time for pitchers). The rule for salary relief on an injured player states: 2) if the player plays less than a year of service (due to injury or any other reason), you may reduce his salary (or the part of the salary that the team that currently possesses him is paying if another team is covering salary) by 25% for all subsequent years. If a player receives a second 25% discount on top of his first, the 25% will be calculated using the new salary rather than the old.

Dodgers apply for salary relief for the retired OF Josh Willingham $6.6 million thru 2017 Edit: Or can I just release him from my roster? The rule on this is: 1) if the player officially retires during the contract, you can drop him after he completes the season (if he retired during the season) or after the following season (if he retired during the offseason). Willingham retired in the off-season (on 11/24/14) so you can't drop him until the end of next season. If you release him now, you get an open roster spot but the money remains on your books for this season under "other considerations" and then you'd re-apply for salary relief again next off-season.

Applying for salary relief for 2016 season: Cliff Lee - 0 IP for 2015. Salary 12.6M. Signed thru 2016. I had to give this one some serious thought, as the injury that kept him out in 2015 was the same injury that caused him to miss the end of 2014. The rules state that salary relief will not be given if the injury was known (or should have been known) at the time of the signing. However, Lee did end up pitching in Spring Training 2015, meaning his real life team, and by extension you, had a reasonable expectation that he'd be playing in 2015, and it was the recurrence of the injury, an event that happened after the signing, that kept him out. As such, I approve this request for salary relief. Lee's salary reduced to $9.4 million.

Applying for salary relief. SP Homer Baily 17.6 million (2015-2018) - only 11.1 IP in 2015. This one required some thought as well, as similar to Lee, Bailey missed time at the end of 2014 with an arm injury as well. However, it seems clear from reports that the injuries were unrelated, and the Tommy John surgery that kept him out for 2015 didn't occur until May. Salary relief approved, Bailey's salary reduced to $13.2 million per year.

SP Yu Darvish 19.5 million (4th year) out last year due to TJS Salary relief denied. Darvish is not actually on a veteran contract anymore. He was signed through 2015, after which point you had the option to keep him at the price he was originally signed for. Salary relief is designed so that teams don't get stuck paying full price injured players (kind of like insurance in MLB). Since Darvish could have been let go this offseason, you are in no way stuck paying him, so salary relief does not apply.
